This study examines the formation of suicidal adolescent subjectivity through the character of Meredith in Tony Kaye’s Detachment (2011), using a Lacanian psychoanalytic framework. Anchored in the registers of the Imaginary, Symbolic, and Real, the analysis traces how structural voids, generated by familial neglect and linguistic alienation, fracture Meredith’s subjectivity and culminate in her suicide. The methodology engages close textual and visual analysis of the film’s narrative and aesthetics, emphasizing its fragmented cinematography, dissonant sound design, and visual motifs of collapse. The reading suggests that Meredith’s crisis is represented through failures of familial and institutional recognition rather than solely as individual pathology. It interprets the film’s portrayal of adolescent suicide in relation to structural pressures and late-capitalist discourses.
